Asian Food Fix at Wosaki - Wok Salad Kitchen

A relaxed dining venue, Wosaki is a wok and salad kitchen located at Al Karama, Dubai. It is a small kitchen (which I think can house around 20 pax) with modern industrial interiors, communal tables benches, complete with some funky wall accents and murals. You can also witness how your food is made fresh from their open kitchen.

Aside from salads and wok dishes, they also offer soups and other Asian bites—spring rolls, fries, and dumplings to name a few—for that quick Asian food fix.

While the menu is straight forward with choices of salads and wok dishes, it still took me a while to choose what to have simply because the items on the menu booklet were hard to read.

There's a lot going on in the menu in terms of how the items were listed and laid out. I think a minimal design with a clean readable font for each item would already do, just like the one in their menu board.

Mark started with some Egg Drop Soup. He had it with chicken for an additional couple of Dirhams. The soup was served hot and subtle flavors from the egg, veggies, and chicken chunks, which revved up Mark's appetite.

I'm a sucker for shrimps so I ordered not just one but two shrimp bites from the appetizers—Tempura Prawns and Dynamite Shrimps.

3 pieces of battered fried prawns were served to us with a sweet chili dip. It was supposed to be lightly battered as indicated in the menu, but it doesn't seem to be the actual case with our order. It was crispy and not oily all, which I liked, but it just had a little too much batter that I can barely taste the shrimp. This is also just a personal opinion, but it looks and tastes very much like the ready-to-cook frozen prawn tempura which I bought before from a local grocery store here.

I wasn't that happy with the tempura, so I already had low expectations with the Dynamite Shrimps, not to mention it also didn't look that appetizing. But I guess I spoke too soon and judged its looks too much.

The shrimps here are now lightly battered, still maintained that crunch and didn't overpower the supple shrimps. I also loved how the spiciness of the "special sauce" was tolerable for me. It may not be visually appealing but it was actually the yummiest from the dishes that we had at Wosaki.

Mark had a salad while I opted for some noodles. The Pesto Chicken Salad came in a bowl of fusilli pasta tossed on pesto dressing, with chicken, parmesan cheese, black olives, sweet corn, and mixed peppers and greens. I'm not a fan of cold pasta, let alone pasta salads, but this one tasted decent. A good choice too if you're trying to eat healthy.

The Wosaki Special is basically egg noodles with chicken, basil, thyme, and chili sauce. It was flavorful and tasted very much like our very own pancit canton but with a spicy kick. I would have totally liked it if it weren't for these 3 letdowns: 1) it was a tad too salty, 2) it was too saucy; I hate saucy noodles, and 3) the noodles were also overcooked; they were mushy.

Both were light but filling and came in generous servings, each can be shared between two people. We didn't finish them off as it was too much for us and just had the rest for take away. We were also offered some desserts but we just had to beg off because we're already full. I heard their Wolfi (waffle kulfi) is good, so I'm gonna try that when I get back.

Overall dining experience in Wosaki is okay; staff is polite and good in suggestions, and service is swift (but we were the only diners during our visit, so I can't really gauge this one). Food is decent, though can still be improved. I’d definitely go back for the Dynamite Shrimps!
